“I just ran the 2016 GO! St. Louis Marathon with a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. In 2015, I prepared the GO! marathon by using an internet training program. I followed it to the T. I missed my goal by 22 seconds and was sore for a week after the race. To prepare for the 2016 race, I reached out to Big River Personal Coaching. I told Coach Jim I would like to set a goal of 4 hours and 15 minutes. Jim said the qualifying time for 2017 Boston Marathon for my age bracket was 4:10. My wife said, “Let’s go for it.” Jim and I met to talk about hydration, nutrition, running shoes, etc. and he observed my running form. I was having problems with my breathing; this is where he really helped me. Because of Jim’s suggestions, I was able to control my breathing. Another thing that helped was having a heart rate monitor. Jim explained where my heartbeat should be for someone my age and he showed me the techniques for keeping my heartbeat at a “safe” level. Jim wrote out a special training program, which included cross training, speed work, easy runs, and long runs. Even though some of these were difficult, they prepared me well. The day prior to the marathon, Jim suggested a benchmark plan as to where I should be on the course at times that would assist me in accomplishing my goal. IT WORKED!! Jim visited with me on a weekly basis to see how my training was going and tweaked my program a few times to suit my needs. I improved my marathon time from 2015 by almost 29 minutes.
